Health Benefits of Tea Tea is known to have more than seven hundred different kinds of chemicals, among which the compounds closely related to human health are flavanoides, amino acids, vitamins (C, E and K), caffeine and polysaccharides. These chemicals have certain positive effects on people’s health. The polyphenols, which account for 20% to 30% of the total weight of dry tea, can activate saliva secretion and so slake the thirst. Polyphenols have a strong binding ability to solidify proteins. Since the main constituting substance of germ cells is protein, concentrated tea can kill germs. Polyphenols in tea are composed of more than thirty phenol substances. One of the main ployphenols found in teas is catechins. There are four main catechines:
Tea reduces risk of cancers. A recent article in Harvard Health Publication indicated “In test tubes, catechins are more powerful than vitamins C and E in halting oxidative damage to cells and appear to have other disease-fighting properties. Studies have found an association between consuming green tea and a reduced risk for several cancers, including, skin, breast, lung, colon, esophageal, and bladder.” (http://www.health.harvard.edu/press_releases/benefit_of_drinking_green_tea) Tea reduces risk of heart disease. According to Harvard’s report, “Additional benefits for regular consumers of green and black teas include a reduced risk for heart disease. The antioxidants in green, black, and oolong teas can help block the oxidation of LDL (bad) cholesterol, increase HDL (good) cholesterol and improve artery function. A Chinese study published recently in the Archives of Internal Medicine showed a 46%-65% reduction in hypertension risk in regular consumers of oolong or green tea, compared to non-consumers of tea” Tea helps weight loss. Research has shown that catechins in teas appears to stimulate the central nervous system and causes fat to be released into the blood stream for the body to use as fuel. This process of fat being used for energy is called “thermogenesis”. It provides extra energy, sheds excess water, and also helps to burn body fat. According to a new study, experts are saying if you drink 4 cups of white tea a day and don't change anything else about your diet, you can possibly lose 4-8 lbs a year. Tea protects teeth. A small amount of Fluorine; an essential building element of bones, teeth, hair and nails, is found in tea. Fluorine can strengthen the acid resistance of teeth, thus preventing cavities, and tea provides a convenient source of this valuable chemical. According to a new study, experts are saying if you drink 4 cups of white tea a day and don't change anything else about your diet, you can possibly lose 4-8 lbs a year. Tea boosts the Immune System. EGCG can dramatically inhibited influenza virus replication, which means that green tea fights the common flu. Tea has less caffeine than coffee. An average serving size of tea has only 1/3 to ½ as much caffeine as that of coffee. For example, an eight-ounce cup of coffee contains around 135 mg caffeine; while tea contains only 30 to 65 mg per cup. If drinking coffee gives you the jitters, causes indigestion or headaches or interferes with sleep, switching to tea. |
